‘France, the home of gastronomic cuisine’ is an oft-repeated statement around the world, and it’s self-evident. ‘France, the land of animated film’ is a much better kept secret. Wrongly! France is the largest producer of animated film in Europe and the third largest worldwide. Kirikou and the Sorceress, and A Monster in Paris are both films that have travelled around the world. The French are also at the controls of filmmaking overseas, with Dreamworks and Pixar regularly recruiting some of their talent from French schools of animation.

Fontevraud Royal Abbey is an active participant in the dynamic animated film sector through our residencies, exhibitions and professional events. Artists in residence from all over the world come to work here and go on to win awards at international film festivals such as Angers, Annecy, La Rochelle, Meknès… Fontevraud plays its part in promoting France at the heart of the world of animation.

Michel Foucher, geographer, diplomat and traveller, will be joined by a number of experts in animation to place, within a geopolitical context, the important role France is playing in this rapidly developing field. A field that comprises a not-negligible part of our creative and innovative nation: the famous ‘French touch’, so envied beyond our borders…
