JOUIN-MANKU / A PEERLESS DUO
Patrick Jouin, originally from Nantes, alongside Canadian Sanjit Manku, form the duo Jouin Manku, a design and interior design studio that is in demand the world over. The Van Cleef & Arpels store in New York, the Bayerischer Hof hotel in Munich, Les Haras in Strasbourg, the Eiffel Tower restaurant, the Plaza Athenee in Paris … these incredibly successful projects are designed by the peerless duo who are also responsible for the design of the new hotel and restaurant at Fontevraud Royal Abbey.
PATRICK JOUIN / PARED BACK AND MODERN
Patrick Jouin designs furniture, objects with fluid, sensual shapes that fit perfectly into the interiors designed by Sanjit Manku. This fan of new wave music and former pupil of Philippe Starck distinguishes himself by his discreet, pared-back style that allies tradition and modernity. He is the ideal artist to work on a Royal Abbey, that was built at the beginning of the 12th century but is more dynamic then ever in the 21st!
FONTEVRAUD L’HÔTEL AND LE RESTAURANT / A DESIGN CHALLENGE TO MEET
Jouin and Manku “gently slipped inside” the Royal Abbey, “so that they could soak up its history and its singularity”. The challenge then was how to breathe a contemporary vision into this space while respecting its history. The answer will be revealed by Patrick Jouin himself, in the very spaces he worked to design.
