INSTALLATIONS / CELEBRATING CONTEMPORARY ART
Heritage site par excellence, Fontevraud Royal Abbey is also implicated in contemporary artistic creation. The site welcomes installations of contemporary art as part of a cycle of themes. In 2012, in partnership with Estuaire, Claude Lévêque created a permanent work entitled ‘Mort en été’ (Death in Summer). This “visual and sound-based intervention that invites the visitor to dream” can be visited in the large dormitory. As well as Lévêque, François Morellet has also created a site-specific commission here. In addition, the FRAC des Pays de la Loire (Loire Region’s contemporary art fund) regularly shows works from its collection here at Fontevraud.
GRAPHIC ARTS GALLERY / THE DRAWING IN ITS MANY FORMS
Fontevraud Royal Abbey also has a dedicated exhibition space, the graphic arts gallery. Its exhibition programme includes drawing in all its many and varied forms: illustration, cartoons, fine arts, design, architecture, landscape, animation… For the annual exhibition, the gallery shows the work of the international artists in residence, or of those who have a link with Fontevraud. From contemporary artist Paul Cox, to children’s illustrator Claude Ponti, the Royal Abbey celebrates contemporary artistic creation in all its diversity.
