grid-el-xxl-6 \">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"wysiwyg-content\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>In 1101, Robert d&#8217;Arbrissel<\/strong>, an itinerant preacher, set up his community of men and women at Fontevraud. Under the protection of the Count of Anjou, Foulque V, the future King of Jerusalem, he founded an abbey for brothers and nuns. During the Hundred Years&#8217; War, the abbey almost disappeared due to a lack of resources and religious vocations.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Bourbon revival<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The 15th century marked the revival of the abbey, which was headed by 5 abbesses from the Bourbon dynasty, who succeeded each other from aunt to niece for more than 150 years. After twelve years of abandonment and looting, the abbey was transformed into a central house of correction by Napoleonic decree.<\/p>\n<p>Work then began on the building for 10 years, and in <strong>1814<\/strong> it was ready to house male, female and child prisoners from 9 neighbouring d\u00e9partements. Fontevraud housed almost<strong> 2,800 prisoners<\/strong> and was considered to be <strong>one of the toughest prisons in France<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"gut-block gut-titre-texte no-bg onload-anim\" >\n\t<div class=\"wrap\">\n\t\t\n\t\t<div class=\"grid-container\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"col-gauche grid-el-tb-6 grid-el-md-5 grid-el-xxl-4\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"wysiwyg-content\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"block-title\">Awareness of our heritage<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\n\t\t\t<div class=\"content grid-el-tb-6 grid-el-md-5 grid-el-xxl-6 \">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"wysiwyg-content\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>Restoration work began on the church and Romanesque kitchens in the <strong>early 20th century<\/strong>. This growing awareness of our heritage and changes in prison doctrine led the Ministry of Justice to consider closing the prison in 1945.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong>1963<\/strong>, the <strong>central prison closed its doors<\/strong>, bringing to an end <strong>nine centuries of life behind closed doors<\/strong>. This marked the start of a vast restoration programme that was to last several decades.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong>1975<\/strong>, the Royal Abbey joined the network of <strong><em>Centres Culturels de Rencontre<\/em><\/strong>, confirming the cultural vocation of the monument, which is now open to the public, artists in residence and researchers.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"gut-block gut-titre-texte no-bg onload-anim\" >\n\t<div class=\"wrap\">\n\t\t\n\t\t<div class=\"grid-container\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"col-gauche grid-el-tb-6 grid-el-md-5 grid-el-xxl-4\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"wysiwyg-content\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"block-title\">Creation at the heart of our approach<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\n\t\t\t<div class=\"content grid-el-tb-6 grid-el-md-5 grid-el-xxl-6 \">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"wysiwyg-content\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>Architects, stonemasons, sculptors, master glassmakers, painters and carpenters have all contributed in their own way to <strong>shaping the present-day face of Fontevraud<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The abbesses, who took the initiative in these huge projects, helped to build this \u2018composite\u2019 place in keeping with the spirit and taste of their time.
